Whenever I ask a Persian speaker what the difference is (specifically in usage, meaning or formality) between a set of words that have a similar translation, they often simply say "X is Arabic, and Y is Persian." Sometimes, it has even seemed like they were correcting me for assuming that a word is Persian, despite the fact that it is regularly used by Persian speakers regardless of its Arabic origin.
